Job Position : Billet Handler – Continuous Casting
Location : Qatar
Contract : 2 Years
Job Purpose :
The Billet Handler is responsible for skilled operations and routine maintenance of billet handling equipment in a continuous casting plant. The role involves monitoring and operating machinery, inspecting billets for quality compliance, and ensuring safe and efficient operations aligned with the company’s standards. Basic technical skills, a strong safety mindset, and the ability to follow instructions are essential.
Technical Operations
Operate and monitor billet handling equipment, including:
- Traveling Cutting Machine (TCM)
- Billet cross transfer cars
- Cooling beds and associated equipment
Conduct equipment preparation tasks during sequence breaks, such as:
- Cleaning TCM nozzles
- Preparing machines for the next cast within the allotted time
Inspect billets for physical or surface defects during production, ensuring compliance with Qatar Steel’s quality standards.
Accurately mark billets to ensure traceability.
Support troubleshooting and operational issues, such as:
- TCM cutting failures
- Hydraulic misalignments
- Motor faults in withdrawal units or billet transfer cars
Maintenance Support
- Perform routine cleaning, adjustment, and minor maintenance of billet handling equipment to minimize unplanned interruptions.
- Assist maintenance teams during planned shutdowns, ensuring machinery is repaired and operating efficiently.
- Identify and report significant maintenance needs to the Shift Supervisor or Senior Technician.
Safety and Communication
- Follow all safety protocols and immediately report unsafe conditions or equipment malfunctions.
- Ensure a smooth handover by providing clear communication to operators on the next shift regarding operational conditions.
Continuous Improvement
- Contribute ideas for improving billet handling processes, reducing downtime, and enhancing efficiency.
Qualifications : High School education, with Vocational Training or a Technical Diploma preferred.
Minimum Experience :
- Minimum 3 years in steelmaking or manufacturing.
- Familiarity with continuous casting plant operations is preferred
Job Specific Skills :
- Basic understanding of billet handling equipment and processes.
- Ability to identify defects in billets and perform quality checks.
- Knowledge of safety regulations in industrial environments.
- Communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in basic mathematical computations for process adjustments.
